Copyediting/Line Editing:

This is a deep dive into your document, sentence by sentence. It ensures (obsessively) that every single line of text is not only grammatically correct, but that your voice and content are clear, consistent, and compelling. Here, the focus is on the details: grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, and word choice. I’ll also ensure consistency in style, structure, terminology, and formatting throughout your document. I make sure to check conformity to the relevant style guide. Sometimes the work needs to fit a word limit, so pruning to meet word count requirements is also part of the service.

Developmental Editing (or Substantive Editing):

Developmental Editing (or Substantive Editing): This editing focuses on the structure of your work—think architecture, the shape of your ideas writ large. I suggest improvements where needed to enhance structure, argument development, and information flow. This may include rearrangements, summaries, or additional navigation aids to improve clarity. I highlight areas where you may need more sources or theoretical support. I will also analyze your language and style, looking for areas to improve ease and conciseness. I can identify jargon and cliches and suggest ways to achieve your desired tone while maintaining your unique writing voice. Finally, I ensure clarity of presentation by focusing on simplicity, accurate titles, and effective use of any visuals and references.

Proofreading (or Mechanical Editing):

This is the final check before submission, focusing on catching any and all surface-level errors in written content and formatting. Proofreading ensures your writing adheres to the rules of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and your chosen style guide. I also check for proper noun-pronoun agreement, verb usage, and sentence structure, and that your citations and footnotes are perfect. This is the final stage before publication, and when you are exhausted from writing, fresh and dedicated eyes are essential.

Beta Reading:

As a Beta Reader, I’ll provide feedback on your overall content, structure, and flow of a manuscript before publication. I offer a reader’s perspective, helping you identify areas that might be confusing or uninteresting to your target audience. This can be helpful in the early stages when you are deciding how to move forward with a manuscript.
